A visual, spoken word event benefitted the NM Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center & the Santa Fe Dreamers Project. Jodie Herrera and sheri crider created merchandise that amplify the conversation about immigration and mass incarceration. The event raised just over $1300 dollars, gave away 250 tacos and was attended by over 200 people.
Mercedez Holtry’s fierce words kicked off our event.
Flight is a series of pop up events featuring local visual and spoken word artists that focus on the invisibility of immigrant detention, both locally and nationally. The culminating project will result in a large scale installation and series of events at the University of New Mexico Art Museum in August 2018.
For all of the events, I have created a series of mobiles of migratory birds. The birds provide a vehicle to raise funds for legal aid and let the mainstream in on the dark story of mass incarceration of immigrants. Each bird offers a brief introduction to individuals and issues faced by detainees at Cibola Detention Center in New Mexico. The Northern Wheatear, American Kestrel and Blue Vireo mirror many of the immigrants country of origin, migratory path and instinct of migration to provide themselves and offspring adequate safety and resources.

This project is partially sponsored by the Right of Return Fellowship. The fellowship invests in formerly incarcerated artists to create original works that further criminal justice reform in partnership with advocates and social justice organizers. sheri crider is one of the first seven recipients of the fellowship.
All the proceeds from your Flight (01) purchase help fund the NM Dream Team, New Mexico Immigrant Law Center & the Santa Fe Dreamers Project. Look for our next fundraising event: September 15th at UNM Art Museum http://artmuseum.unm.edu/
